With 446 healthcare jobs in 2020 and 9.1% growth over five years, the health sector is one of the few bright spots in the local economy — outpacing the district-wide growth rate of 7%. More importantly, projected 5-year growth of 15.6% is the highest in the four-county district, meaning healthcare will likely become an even larger share of local employment. That growth is being driven by demographics: the 65+ population across the district grew 25.3%, and Trinity County skews older than average.

The challenge is compensation and access. Average healthcare earnings in the county sit at $40,013, well below the district average, which makes recruiting and retaining practitioners difficult. Residents still depend on Redding as the regional medical hub for anything beyond community health centers and basic clinics — a significant barrier given the travel distance. Expanding local healthcare capacity, even modestly, would reduce that dependency and keep more health dollars circulating locally.

The actionable gap is workforce training. Regional programs at Shasta College and Simpson University are scaling up nursing and practitioner pipelines, but Trinity County needs a deliberate strategy to connect local residents to those programs and incentivize graduates to practice here. Without that, the projected job growth will go unfilled or be met by imported labor that doesn't stay.
