Trinity County Perspective
Reliable internet access remains the single most urgent economic development priority in the region, and for a county as remote and geographically dispersed as Trinity, the stakes are even higher. Community surveys rated broadband satisfaction at just 2.1 out of 5 — the second-lowest score of any factor measured. Over a third of respondents (36.1%) ranked improved broadband as the top immediate need, and it held the top spot for 5-year priorities as well at 34.9%. These numbers come from the four-county CEDS region, but Trinity County's rugged terrain, low population density, and limited provider competition almost certainly place it at or below the regional average for actual connectivity.
The regional target is 85% household broadband access within five years — a benchmark that would represent a significant lift for Trinity County, where many rural areas along corridors like Highway 3 and Highway 36 still lack basic service. Closing this gap is not optional. Broadband is now the prerequisite for remote work (critical for retaining the residents who moved in during COVID), emergency communications during wildfire season, and access to education and telehealth. Board members should treat broadband infrastructure with the same urgency as roads and water — it is a utility, and without it, nearly every other economic development goal stalls.
